Aconitifolium. When these trees turn
color in the fall, they practically run out of the
nursery. They have a spectacular scarlet red shaded with burnished
orange, and yellow
all on one leaf. The leaves are have divided and deeply cut
offering a fern-like
appearance --thus the common name, Fernleaf Japanese Maple. Grows to 15' tall.

|
 | Beni maiko. One of our favorite names -
when translated it means 'Red-haired Dancing Girl'. Foliage emerges as
scarlet in the spring and becomes a darker red then reddish green depending on
conditions. Flashes of scarlet occur all year round. Grows to
about 6' tall |
 | Bloodgood. One of the most
popular Japanese maples and thus more easily found. This is an upright form
with large, deep red, almost black leaves. Bloodgoods retain their color well,
even during the heat of our Atlanta summers. Fall color is crimson. |
 | Burgundy Lace. This is a
more delicate form of Japanese maple It is a small, spreading tree with
low branches and a canopy of burgundy-red, deeply-divided leaves with serrated
edges. Fall color is red. Grows 13'-15' tall. |
 | Butterfly. Perhaps one of the better known
varieties, this green and white variegated upright maple can grow to about
10'-12' tall. |
 | Crimson Queen. Again, a
deep red, cut leaf variety -- hence the name. This is a weeping variety
which in mature forms has a trunk completely draped in dark crimson leaves |
 | Ever Red. The new spring growth of this tree is
covered with silvery hairs so as the leaves unfold the tree looks gray turning
to deep red, thus the name. Ever Red holds its red color longer than many
others into the mid-summer months – but not as long as Crimson Queen. Partial
shading will prolong the deep colors. |
 | Garnet. Outstanding red-orange leaf color that keeps
well except in very dry conditions. When grown in shade it has a greenish
tinge. This vigorous grower forms a beautiful cascading mound shape.
Similar to Inabe Shidare and Stella Rossa. |
 | Green Cascade. A green-leaf weeping variety
forming a large mound. The leaves are highly divided and distinct from
the dissected variety of Japanese maples. Does well in full sun
locations. Great red or orange fall color. |
 | Green Hornet. Another green-leaf weeping
variety whose leaves can show tinges of red and orange and burgundy in the
spring. Fall color is red and orange. |
 | Higasyama. This tree
originated at Mt. Higasa in Japan. Variable foliage until maturity when
it offers a variegated, creamy-pink and green leaf
Fall color is yellow-orange to red. Upright growth habit to 18'-20'
tall. |
 | Hogyoku. Now for an upright, green leaved
form. It has excellent summer foliage color with shiny, rich green
and heavily textured leaves. Fall color is orange. An upright
tree, it can reach 15'-18' tall and wide. |
 | Inabe shidare. Another
weeping Maple with a mushroom shape and dark wine colored leaves that
generally hold their color. Similar to Red Dragon and Stella Rossa with its
open habit. |
 | Kamagata. A dwarf, slow growing variety with a
very dense, well branched habit.
In the fall, leaves turn a pleasant yellow. This tree is fairly rare but
prized for its small size -- growing to only four to five feet |
 | Kurui jishi. Very,
very different. Densely branched, distinctive smaller tree
growing to only about 10 to 12 feet. Very similar and often confused with
Okushimo due to its "rolled" leaves. |
 | Okushimo. Translated this means “pepper and salt”,
perhaps because of the oddly shaped and rolled leaves that let the viewer see
both the upper and lower sides of the leaf creating a contrast in color.
The tree has a vase shaped and is fairly narrow but densely branched. It
can reach 20' to 25' tall. |
 | Orido Nishiki. A variegated leaf variety.
The green palmate leaves have bright pink and creamy markings. This
trees performs best in a bit of shade. Grows to about 20' tall. |
 | Osakazuki. A green upright grower.
Performs well in our summer sun. It grows to about 20' to 25' tall. |
 | Oshio beni. A sturdy
upright grower with bright new growth that becomes bronze as it matures. The
tree does not retain the bright color as well as Bloodgood and does to tend to
burn in hot sun, so we would use it in a more protected environment. Autumn
color is a bright scarlet. Grows to 20' to 25' tall. |
 | Red Dragon. Not seen as often as some of the
other red dissected weeping varieties, but generally extremely well shaped.
More compact. Dark red to burgundy leaves that retain their color well. |
 | Red Pygmy. Has a more unusual leaf for a
Japanese maple - narrow and long. Red to maroon colored. Grows
only to about 7' tall. |
 | Rough Bark or Ara kawa. A very interesting
feature of this upright maple is its corky, rough bark that makes the
tree look far older than its true age. Can reach 25'-30' tall.
|
 | Sango Kaku. More commonly known, because of
the bright coral color of its bark as the Coral Bark maple. The tree is
often best in winter when the bark stands out against the brown of the winter
forest or snow. A green leaf variety that has an added bonus of yellow
fall foliage that again provides a contrast to the bark. Fall color is
yellow-gold. |
 | Seiryu.
Green, upright with finely dissected leaves. Leaves are lightly tipped with
reddish tones as they unfold. Spectacular fall colors from gold to yellow
with a suffusion of crimson. We like to plant it where it has some protection
from the summer sun. |
 | Shaina. One of our
favorite dwarf varieties. This spectacularly red leaf maple is highly
compact with the leaves growing close to the branch. Can take full sun
and is suited to small gardens, borders, and rock gardens. |
 |
Tamukeyama. We like this variety above all others as it holds its
color well in our harsh summers. Its new foliage is bright crimson red
but turns to dark, purple red as it unfolds. At maturity it is mushroom
shaped, cascading. |
 | Tsuma gaki. It is hard to describe this
maple. It has a small upright form but the leaves are quite variable --
starting with bright green tipped in red in spring and bleaching to a pink
tipped in red in summer. |
 | Ukigumo. More of a shrub than a tree, growing
only to about 7'-8' tall. Its variegated leaves are its main attraction
with pink, white, and cream striped and speckled leaves. |
 | Villa Taranto. With its very delicate leaves,
this maple appears to be pink in color in the early spring, turns greed with
some red and purple tones. Upright, dome shaped. To 8'-10' tall
and 7' wide. |
 | Viridis. Green weeping maple. Bright green
foliage. Better suited to more protected, shadier sites. |
 | Waterfall. Dissected leaf variety of weeping
Japanese maple. Cascades in irregular falls, thus the name. Does
well in full sun. |
